What is Somatic Release

Soma stands for “body”. Somatic, is that which is within the body. Very simply, we are releasing that which is held within the body.

We all know that it’s more than just cognitive (thought based) or behavioral based changes that we need- we KNOW there is something deeper. Yet, that deeper layer feels out of reach, at the tip of our tongue or just completely out of our grid. You know what I mean?

I remember when I first sat down to think about my “shadow”. It felt familiar, yet so far from my awareness.

We know there is a deeper layer and yet, it is a real challenge for us to get to it. It is illusive and hides from us. And it hides, in the body.

Somatic Release can mean different things to different people. For me it has 2 significant parts; the physical and emotional; both of which have many other layers. The physical component is about the tension, the pain, the knots, the stress, the tightness, the disease or discomfort in the body; this is the muscles, the organs, the fascia, the bones, etc. The emotional component, involves a lifetime of feelings that may have been kept “hidden” within us.

The emotional body holds energy (like trauma, anxiety, fear, stress, sadness) in the water that flows through all of the physical dimensions.

Often, we will “release” some of the physical symptoms through treatments like physical therapy, massage, cupping, trigger point, breath work, yoga, may be even reiki or other forms of healing. And while this can help- if we do not understand and consciously release the emotional component- the tension (or other symptoms) will return.

In my form of Somatic Release, I guide clients into both the physical + emotional elements to support them to release the emotions, energy, knots, struggles, challenges, pain points, and more. In the sessions, I seek to guide clients into the inner realms as well as the physical realms.

This is a difficult process to explain, as clients often say, this is much more personal and often words fail to describe the experience.
